Detailed Review
`Pan Butter Jam` is a romantic comedy directed by Raghav Mirdath that revolves around two mothers, Lalitha (Saranya Ponvannan) and Uma (Devadarshini), who are determined to get their children—Chandru (Raju) and Madhumitha (Aathiya)—to fall in love and marry. But things take a different turn. Chandru is in love with Nandhini (Bhavya), while Madhumitha has feelings for Akash (Babu). Meanwhile, Chandru’s friend Saravanan harbors one-sided love for Madhumitha.
So whose love wins in the end? Do the mothers plans work out? That is what the film playfully explores.
Though Raju has acted before, this is his first outing as the lead. He carries some scenes confidently and delivers witty one-liners well, but still has room to grow as an actor. Aathiya`s cheerful performance is charming, while Bhavya also plays her part well. Saranya and Devadarshini shine with their seasoned performances as the determined mothers. Charlie appears briefly as Raju`s father, and Vikranth shows up in a cameo with a dose of dramatic advice.
The film tries to explore modern friendship, love, and heartbreak—but stumbles in logic. For instance, characters who look like college professors are passed off as first-year students, and the mothers thinking about marriage immediately after Class 12 feels far-fetched. Big emotional moments are followed by surprising reveals like `they are just in their first year`—which is hard to digest.
Nivas K. Prasanna`s songs don’t linger in the mind, though the background score and Babu Kumar`s cinematography blend well with the narrative. Editor John Abraham could`ve trimmed a bit more for better pace.
If you`re in the mood for a light-hearted, popcorn-style romantic entertainer, you might enjoy Pan Butter Jam once.
Overall Verdict: Pan Butter Jam — a little too much, a little too sweet.
