Detailed Review
The story begins in Palakkad district, located on the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border. The protagonists, Udhayan (Sean Nigam) and Kumar (Santhanu), are close friends and skilled kabaddi players. Along with their teammates, they strengthen their team, Panchami Riders, making it one of the most powerful sides around.
In the same town, three people—loan shark Pairavan (Selvaraghavan), Soda Babu (Alphonse Puthren), and Poornima Indrajith—each run their own kabaddi teams. One day, when Pairavan`s team is defeated by the Panchami Riders, he becomes furious and tries to lure Udhayan, Kumar, and two others to his side by offering them triple their current pay.
The friends accept his offer, but soon face unexpected problems. How do they overcome them? Director Unni Sivalingam presents this as a mildly engaging action drama.
In his 25th film, Sean Nigam impresses with his energy and performance in the kabaddi scenes, handling both action and romance well. Santhanu delivers a natural performance, though he leaves us puzzled at times. Preethi Asrani, who plays Sean Nigam`s love interest, has limited screen time. Selvaraghavan shines as the menacing moneylender villain, while Alphonse Puthren, despite his lean frame, does a commendable job. Poornima Indrajith performs well but her character lacks depth, making little impact on the story.
Technically, the film looks good—cinematographer Alex J. Pulickal`s work stands out. Sai Abhyankar`s music is decent with two listenable tracks, though the background score occasionally loses focus. The real strength of the movie lies in its well-choreographed action sequences by stunt masters Santhosh and Vicky, who deserve special praise.
The story races through the first half, but the second half struggles due to a weak plot, testing the audience’s patience. Yet, the fight scenes keep things somewhat engaging. Poor character design also leaves several roles feeling unnecessary.
Overall, Balti – a blend of Kabaddi and Action.
