Detailed Review
When villain Ranjith Sanjeev steps out of his car, he walks straight to the tied-up watchman and demands, “Tell me, where is she?” The watchman replies, “You’re asking me where she is just so you can kill her. But she’s gone to find someone who’ll kill you instead.” To that, Ranjith coldly responds, “Whoever it is, I’ll deal with them,” and kills the watchman on the spot.
Who is “she”? And who did she go looking for?
“She” is none other than Ranjith’s own sister — Tanya Ravichandran. But why does Ranjith want to kill his own sister?
Raised from childhood to believe that one must do anything to stay in the number-one position, Ranjith grows up obsessed with maintaining his family’s educational institution at the top. At one stage, to protect that position, he even kills his father. Later, one of his reckless actions leads to the tragic death of 41 children. When his sister Tanya decides to stand as a witness against him in court, Ranjith sets out to kill her. Realizing this, the watchman tries to help Tanya escape — but a furious Ranjith murders him in cold blood.
Now, who is Tanya searching for?
She goes in search of Rambo, a kickboxer.
Rambo, raised by a single mother, was taught never to abandon the people who trust him. After his mother’s death, he takes charge of the orphanage where she once worked and now cares for 200 children.
When Tanya comes looking for him, she decides not to meet him directly, thinking about the safety and future of those children. However, one day, Arulnithi (Rambo) faces a financial crisis, and a kidnapping job — to capture Tanya — comes his way. He accepts it. But after hearing her story, he decides to fight for justice and expose the truth behind the death of 41 children.
Did he succeed?
Director Muthaiyaa takes a familiar hero-vs-villain template and attempts to make it gripping and emotional.
Arulnithi delivers a strong performance, especially in the action and boxing sequences. However, he slightly misses emotional depth in a few scenes. Danya Ravichandran plays her role with understanding and grace — though shown as a rich woman, her simple salwar look makes her appear grounded and charming. Ranjith Sanjeev, as the villain, looks the part with his attire, mannerisms, and presence, though his dialogue delivery lacks menace. VTV Ganesh adds light comedy here and there, while Haris Baradi, Ayesha, and Saran Raj do justice to their roles.
On the technical front, R.D. Rajasekhar’s cinematography, Gibran’s background score, and the “Haiyoda” song are major pluses.
Though the story — a ruthless college tycoon ready to do anything for the top spot versus a kind-hearted hero who never betrays trust — is quite routine, the dialogue delivery and character selection add strength. A few scenes lack logic, and the climax boxing scene feels a bit forced, as both the hero and villain are shown as trained boxers.
Still, Muthaiyaa deserves credit for attempting something different from his usual filmmaking style, though a few screenplay tweaks could have made it sharper.
In the end, Rambo may follow a regular story path, but for those who enjoy a touch of emotion and strong action sequences, it serves as a good pick.
Overall: Rambo – A familiar screenplay with strong dialogues and a few forced moments.
