Detailed Review

Sivanesan (Rajkiran) runs a small idli shop in his hometown. Though the income is modest, he leads a peaceful and simple life. His son Murugan (Dhanush), however, dreams of a luxurious lifestyle — with a big house and car — unlike his father. Determined to earn well, he studies catering and moves to Chennai for work. From there, he gets a chance to go to Bangkok, where he finds the life he always wanted. During his stay, he falls in love with his boss`s daughter, and their wedding date is fixed.

Unexpectedly, Murugan returns to his hometown and decides to run his father`s old idli shop. But without his father`s special touch, customers stop coming, and business slows down. On one side, he loses his boss`s respect, and on the other, the townspeople`s trust. How does Murugan overcome this situation? Can he revive the idli shop successfully? And what happens to his Bangkok boss and his daughter? Dhanush presents this as an emotional sentimental drama.

Without any flashy intro song or mass BGM, Dhanush delivers exactly what the character of Murugan needs. He shines both when he misses his family abroad and when he later struggles to regain his dignity at home. Nithya Menen, though seen briefly, makes her presence felt as the talkative village girl. Samuthirakani, despite playing the villain, does not leave a strong impact due to a weakly written role. Rajkiran impresses with his natural acting, offering fatherly wisdom to both his son and the audience. Arun Vijay plays an aggressive character seeking revenge, and though he performs well, the role somehow does not suit him perfectly. Ilavarasu, Sathyaraj, and Shalini Pandey fit neatly into their parts.

Cinematographer Kiran Kaushik beautifully contrasts the concrete city walls with the lush green fields of the village. In G. V. Prakash`s music, two songs stand out, though the background score feels slightly dull.

Dhanush chose a realistic story and skillfully blended emotions like love, anger, and regret. However, the predictability of the screenplay makes the audience easily guess what happens next, reducing the thrill. Still, this is an average yet heartfelt family drama worth watching once.

Overall: Idli Kadai – Has taste, but lacks heat.
